About the Artwork

Saturday Evening Post cover, April 04, 1953.

Just as Norman Rockwell's people are often composites of different models, his architectural backgrounds are often combinations of different locations. In Walking to Church the distant church steeple belonged to First Baptist Church of Bennington, Vermont. The storefront and brownstone came from Troy, New York. The patina of these older buildings provided the perfect contrast to set off the sparkle and newness of the young family's new Easter outfits. In the Post's caption for this picture, the editors claimed that Rockwell chose this smaller than usual canvas size to match Vermeer's painting, The Little Street.
