HUMANITY, NOT POLITICS (BLUE BORDER)

About the Artwork

Rudy Gutierrez is an American illustrator and educator born in the Bronx, NY, of Puerto Rican heritage, and raised in Teaneck, NJ. He has been a professor of illustration at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he has taught since 1990.

The artist’s work has appeared in films and performances, and on U.S. Postage stamps (Musical Icon Series of Jimi Hendrix), posters, and LP / CD covers. His artwork for Santana’s Shaman was used as a set design at the 2002 Super Bowl half-time show and for various products. More recently, his paintings have been commissioned for the film Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary. Featured in many public and private collections, his art is included in those of musical icons Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, and Wayne Shorter.

Unity Project illustrations by Yuko Shimizu and Rudy Gutierrez selected as an American Illustration 40 Winners
From over 7,000 entries from 1,342 artists, art directors, publishers, agencies and schools, the jury selected winning images to appear in the American Illustration 40 book and represent the best pictures from 2020. Three hundred of the industry’s best established, emerging, and student illustrators will be presented in print, online and, with a little luck, in person this November to celebrate this occasion.

Art that inspires us to VOTE

The Unity Project is an art and civics initiative of the Norman Rockwell Museum and contemporary illustrators that is dedicated to an inclusive America in which all voices are heard. Inspired by the rich and continuing tradition of American illustration, this project inspires us to consider the integral role that published imagery plays in creating cultural narratives which connect us to our times.
