About the Artwork

1943 Painting for Twentieth-Century Fox movie advertisement. Oil on canvas. Collection of the Marino Family Trust.

Rockwell received an invitation to discuss a commission for a movie poster for Twentieth Century Fox's film version of Franz Werfel's novel, The Song of Bernadette. A poverty stricken child growing up in the mid-nineteenth-century French city of Lourdes, Bernadette Soubirous has religious visions that direct her to help create a chapel in a grotto containing a spring with miraculous healing properties. Jennifer Jones, chosen by Fox to portray Bernadette, won the 1944 Academy Award for best female performance for this, her first motion picture role.
