Saturday Evening Post cover, Aug 14, 1926.
Norman Rockwell's The Bookworm featured one of Rockwell's favorite models of the 1920's James K. Van Brunt, depicted here as an absent minded avid reader distracted by a selection of old books. Rockwell builds character by including mismatched shoes, a coat which has been buttoned incorrectly, and list of chores by his feet that are ignored as he browses.
The original oil painting of The Bookworm by Norman Rockwell recently sold at auction for $3.8 million, well over the initial $2.5 million high estimate. It now belongs to a private collection.
